چکیده

AIM To investigate bone mineral status in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). PATIENTS AND METHODS Whole body bone mineral content (BMC), projected bone area, and bone mineral density (BMD) were determined by dual energy x ray absorptiometry in 134 patients with CF and compared with 396 healthy controls. RESULTS In patients 19 years of age, BMD and BMC for age were significantly reduced. CONCLUSION Short and narrow bones were the main reasons for reduced BMC for age in patients </= 19 years of age, indicating that treatment to prevent osteoporosis in younger patients should be directed at increasing bone size, whereas conventional treatment with calcium and vitamin D supplementation alone might not be as effective. Because of the significant decrease in BMD and BMC in adult patients, we fear that these patients may develop osteoporotic fractures prematurely.

Background: Failure to maintain bone mass density is a major complication in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) and also identifying associated risk factors in CF patients. Materials and Methods: Present study conducted on 59 CF patients aged 5-35 years referred to respiratory clinic of Masih Daneshvari Hospi...

Bone mineral content in cystic fibrosis patients: correlation with fat-free mass.

OBJECTIVE To assess the bone mineral content in well nourished patients with cystic fibrosis and to seek a correlation with fat-free mass. METHODS Fourteen cystic fibrosis patients aged 6 to 20 years were studied and compared to 14 healthy controls matched for gender, age, and nutritional status. Bone mineral content was determined by dual energy x ray absorptiometry (DEXA). RESULTS Nutriti...

Prevalence of bone mineral disease among adolescents with cystic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of bone mineral disease among adolescents with cystic fibrosis and to relate the findings with the variables studied. METHODS The study enrolled 37 adolescents who were assessed for: nutritional status according to height/age and body mass/age ratios; bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and entire body by densitometry with dual emission X-ray; daily d...

Serum phospholipid fatty acid pattern is associated with bone mineral density in children, but not adults, with cystic fibrosis.

Essential fatty acids (EFA) have proved to be important for normal bone mineral density (BMD) and bone growth in animal studies. Patients with cystic fibrosis often have low serum EFA levels, and low BMD has also been reported in patients with normal anthropometry. The aim of the present study was to analyse if BMD during a 2-year period was related to fatty acid status in patients with cystic ...
